About Me
I come from Shenyang, Liaoning Province China. As most Chinese children do, I started to learn English when I was very young, and I thought it was wonderful to get to know another language and at the same time another culture. I enjoyed learning English, so I decided to choose my major as English Education for my undergraduate study in Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Dalian is a beautiful city with great weather, and I enjoyed the city as well as my four years of study there. While I was in Dalian, I started to become interested in education especially English education as I took courses in this area and also was able to achieve some teaching experience. Due to the fact that undergraduate students were required to take various courses from different subjects, and there is a limitation on the amount of time students are able to spend focusing on their own major, I felt that what I learned about English Education was only laid a foundation and played a role in introducing me to the world of English Education. I felt that I wanted to learn more about it before I become an English teacher.
So after I earned my Bachelor's Degree in China, I applied and was accepted from the MA TESL program at Penn State. I really appreciate this opportunity because on the one hand, I always wanted to experience life in America since all I knew about English and America I had learned through textbooks. On the other hand, and which is a more important aspect, was an opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge in the filed of English Education and further my teaching development. In the past two years, I was introduced to a variety of theories, research in linguistic and area of education, which emphasize the functional nature of language and teaching and learning, and I also gained opportunities to practice teaching (both individually and collaboratively) in different ESL instructional contexts.
I'm intending to graduate after this semester. As for my plans after graduation, I would like to go back to China to teach English. I'm looking forward to combining what I learned and practiced here at Penn State with the ESL context I will be working within in China.
